Year Round Train to Compete/Train to Win

Cheema’s Competitive Paddling Program is focused on developing racers. The sub-groups (Train to Compete/TTC and Train to Win/TTW) offer two tiers for highly committed athletes to train full-time. Participation must be approved by a coach who decides the best training group based on the type of training and the phase of training. Paddlers in the Competitive Program will have access to supplemental sport science supports, gym access, swimming and field house sessions. Cheema coach to athlete ratios are set at approximately 1 coach to every 15 athletes. This is designed to ensure more individualized feedback and personalized training adaptations where necessary.

Fees for both programs are the same and include 12-months of programming and competition preparation. Travel to camps and competitions is not included. Participants in this program will be provided with volunteer leadership opportunities and be considered for part-time summer program coaching.

Developing High Performance/Train to Compete (TTC) - Once athletes leave the Learn to Train (LTT) program they will be ready for Cheema’s Train to Compete year-round program for U12, U14 and U16+ athletes. TTC is designed to teach athletes how to train effectively, fuel optimally, develop mental performance skills, compete, and improve overall performance. The program includes a more disciplined training program, with an introduction to swimming sessions, ski camps, Florida training camp as well as participation at regional/national trials and the National Championships (qualifying standards must be achieved for Florida camp, trials and Nationals).

Participants will continue to build on technical, endurance, speed, and strength capabilities at a more committed level. The TTC Program runs 7-8 training sessions a week. Practice durations and times can change throughout the year based on the group’s yearly training plan.

High Performance/Train to Win (TTW) - Designated athletes (ages U16+) will be offered earned training opportunities at the highest level under the guidance of our senior coaches.  Discipline coaches will develop a Train to Win performance pathway for athletes showing the commitment and readiness needed at this level. Expectations are high requiring full participation in 8-9 weekly scheduled workouts and adherence to training and rest requirements designed for local, national, and international competitions. Athletes may not attend this program on a part time basis except where provincial/national team training requirements are scheduled.

TTC/TTW fees also include full summer registration.   Full Day (8:30-4:30) Summer program (July/August). Extended hours additional cost

Fees $2998 + $50 Capital fund fee, payable monthly. Program start date September 14.

Cheema’s program for developing participants is designed to teach the basics of canoe-kayak and prepare individuals for age-appropriate competition. We have two year-round streams to choose from - FUNdamentals and Learn to Train (LTT) which are based on Canoe Kayak Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development model. Our coaches will place participants in the most appropriate group to receive the coaching they require depending on physical and emotional readiness for different degrees of training.

Sessions will be offered Mon-Fri - 4:30-6:00; Seasonal Saturdays, 9-10:30

AND

Full Day (8:30-4:30) Summer program (July/August). Extended hours additional cost.

Participants will work ethic and focus on learning to paddle with proper technique; build proficiency in singles and crew boats; and develop endurance, speed, and strength.

During the winter months participants will build their physical literacy skills through many different forms of age-appropriate strength exercises, games and other sports like soccer and wrestling. They will develop endurance capabilities and learn how to swim for training purposes. Participants will evolve these skills over 12 months, preparing them to be introduced to racing in a fun, team-oriented group. November to March there are swimming options at the Sackville Sport Stadium pool Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between 6-9:00 am, before school that replace some of the afternoon practices. We encourage LTT participants to attend two of the swim workouts per week.

This program is designed for 10-14 year olds who wish to take their paddling skills to the next level but may also take part in other sports throughout the year.

The program runs from September 3rd (first day of school) through to August 20th. An afterschool option is available for children that will arrive at Cheema via school bus. For an additional $7 per day your child will be supervised upon arrival until the start of the program and will be provided a light snack.

Fee $2820 per year plus $50 capital fund fee. Program starts September 14th.
